July 2010 Mooring Line
It seems like January was just last week but here we are now half way through the year. I am going to take a risk here and say we are all VERY excited for summer 2010!!! June was a very exciting month, with many club activities on and off the water.
Now that summer is approaching, it’s time to do some serious barbecuing. Good thing West Marine is so generous and lets us stuff ourselves silly with hot dogs! The past couple of years West Marine has generously donated supplies for our program to staff a hot dog stand. All we have to do is provide the man power to sell the dogs. This gives us an opportunity to collect donations for scholarships and then award sailing grants to kids who otherwise would not have the opportunity to experience sailing/fishing. I would like to thank the Bowman’s for consistently volunteering their time to this event. Eric and Brian have been a big help when we have had trouble staffing the stand. Jr. Vice Commodore Jessie O’Dell organized the sale over May 16-17 and Jana took charge of the Memorial Day weekend event. Thanks to all the families who helped out. The Farmers, Buckners, Luke Kellerhouse, James Ziebarth, Alex Navarro, Shawn Gardner, Jordon Heldman the Letchingers, Currys, Odou’s, my parents and all the other selfless people that volunteered their time. The total funds raised have been over $1000 this year! A new record already!
At the club our witty Dads have been putting their minds together to make towing boats a simple pleasure . They are currently in the process of re-engineering the lighting systems making them bullet-proof. Next time you see one of the guys please thank them; Mike Grill, Alan Shumate, Drew Bernet, Bruce Harris (Bruce doesn’t even have a kid in the program, he just likes to help!), Rick Pluth, and Chris O’Bryan. They have been a huge help to our program over the years.
As summer roles around, it is time to sign up for the junior program. At this point the first session is full, but there is still room in the second and third sessions. Session III features a new class “Sailing Fun” for those who have completed beginners or intermediates and want to play on CFJ’s, 420’s, keel boats and kayaks.
The Joes Sabot regatta in Coronado is a classic for those on the Sabot circuit. Monica Curry was our brave mom towing the 12 boat trailer both ways. The day was windy but consistent. Cody Odou and Gwyn Curry were outside about 1/2 down from the bridge sailing in the chop so common in South Bay. Cody won race 3 in B fleet his first win in this competitive fleet. Gwyn is our super strong starter she can get off the line like no one else. On the inside course coach Bri Hull had Donatello Degeorgio, Dean Curry, James Letchinger and Dylan Elliott. James walked away with a 4th place in C3 fleet. Way to go team SWYC!
The Mission Bay Yacht Club Spring Sabot Showdown was a big hit with over 75 Sabots participating. The conditions were prime and the general consensus was a good time was had by all. Jack McGraw had a successful regatta in the A fleet with a 7th place finish overall. James Ziebarth got himself around the course with blistering pace to take 16th overall.
The last Southern California High School Event was the Baker Team Racing Qualifier on Mission Bay. The event was exceptionally light, but we still managed to pull off a full round-robin and a championship round. The Point Loma Pointers managed to keep their speed up during the event to win it with no losses. Thank you to Drew Bernet, Jeanette Novarina, Doug Paine, and Coach Rachel Neal for helping the regatta becoming another hit on Mission Bay.
Team Point Loma Pointers went onto the National championships in Seattle, Washington and did something similar by winning the whole thing with only two losses. Go Pointers!
Next year yours truly joined by Coach Alexa, and Alex Navarro will all be going off to college. Alexa will be attending Old Dominion University in Virginia while Alex and I will be attending community college here in San Diego.
Congrats to College grads: Rachael Neal Santa Barbara U (working in a law office this next year before starting law school in 2011), Michele Finazzo Claremont college Doctor of Theology and getting married in Oct., and Michael Buffaloe graduated from Sacramento State going into the Law enforcement field after teaching a few weeks of Lasers this summer at SWYC. Congrats to all the grads!
Upcoming Events: Let’s just say that there is something almost everyday in July and on every weekend. The Mooring Line Committee would not welcome an entire page of July events. I have noted just a few of the big events, but please see the Jr. Calendar, check our web site or the SCCYA calendar book for more info.
